Try ko naman ni bi start ini nga thread, hopefully those who loved the outdoors and outdoor activities like mountain trekking, climbing, hiking, and specifically cycling will respond and post on this thread.:thumb
I know that during the time I left Bacolod, there are plenty of WVSU-COM alumni's who were hit by the mountain biking craze. To name just a few of them, Joel Yap, Axzworxs, Fritz J, Benjie S, Banloi, Romy Reyes, Gamay Viaje....:thumb:thumb
Of course I also went gaga with mountain biking before. I started to ride way back in 1995. My first bike was a generic chrome-moly one which was hard-tail. Then it was replaced by a Mongooze Aluminum, still hardtail. I'll try to post some pictures of my biking days then...hopefully may makita pa ko.:clapclap:
Anyway, those of you who wants to post and placed your pictures are welcome here...:clapclap::clapclap:
Hopefully roncom will post his photos on top of Canlaon Volcano here...:thumb

Sige ah, Will try to look for those pics....:D Seemed like t'was just yesterday lang. With regards to biking, I've been doing short rides here along the east river, starting midtown all the way down to battery park... Medyo layo-layo man ah, just enough to get my heart pumped up. It's a good thing that my wife has a mountain bike which she doesn't use na since she's preggy so ako na lang ga gamit.

Great idea to start this thread!:thumb
Actually Ice, most cycle shops fix and assemble parts you want. But then that's extra labor money. It's not that difficult to switch different size derailleurs. If you plan to do technical trails, that is freeride and downhill, use less front and rear cassettes. That way indi mag kalahukas kadina mo. Generally, use less and smaller cassettes when doing freerides and downhill. These are found in full suspension bikes not hardtails. Hardtails single suspension bikes are good for cross country or long distance trails.
Here are some Bike shops you can check in you area:

Wow Ronald, that's a long way back and forth :clapclap: ... that's approx. 12-15 miles.. that's good exercise :thumb
I remember when i use to stay at the Bently hotel, i run the east river path from Queensboro to 106th street... about 4 miles back and forth. Nice view!
Well going back to biking, i think Ice should get one of those cruiser bikes like this! :sneer:

The ride is ok since it's a paved road and you can't feel the distance because of the wonderful views along the way. I want to go further uptown pa tani from where we live but then I'm a little apprehensive na coz once you reached beyond 46th or something street the bike path ends and you mix with ongoing traffic na. Haras-haras pa na daan mga taxi diri.

Ha! you know Walmart and Target bikes serve their purpose. As long as you take good care of it. (indi pag ipatuk-tok sa kilid) They have a good half-life if you wash off the dirt and lubricate it after use. Like automobiles, they are not Hondas and Toyotas but can get you from point A to B.
I think brand names like Kona, Ellsworth, Giant, GT, Gary Fisher, Trek etc. are over priced from $2000-$7000. But you can really tell that you're in a "Bentley" when you're riding in one heck of a bike.
Happy biking fellas! :smile2:

Ice gin utod mo naman ang topic? ano kadto naman ta sa fishing? :sneer:
Anyway, if you want to spend $500+ on a mountain bike, make sure get the one with disc brakes. Disc brakes are just way better on any trail conditions. Ok mana ang V-brakes or calipers. Schwinn bikes have MTB with disc and are less than $400. Not bad at all. Also Check Cannondale bikes. You can even buy a full-suspension K2 bikes or a nice Hardtail Ironhorse sa Sports Authority or Dick's Sporting Goods. Damo lang pili-an

Ice, i'll go with the Ironhorse. (makers of K2 mtbs too) They just have better fork selection. They use Rock Shox or Fox front suspensions or sometimes Marzocchi forks. That's why they have a more comfortable 120 mm travel in front. Mongoose bikes have been around for decades. My BMX bike was a mongoose before. Serious Mtb riders don't test MTB mongooses, only BMX ones. Also i'm not familiar with SR/Suntour forks that they put in a Mongoose, only with a 100 mm travel.

Pre Ice, make sure that you have the right assembly. The "true" Iron Horse Yakuza Chimpira uses Marzocchi Drop-Off III forks and I think sa pics nga gin post mo, it looks like a different one, maybe a 2003 model. The top part should be black not chrome finish. The real marzocchi dropoff 3 or 4 (2007) are for freeride Yakuzas and this sh** ROCKS!
So beware of sale bikes with wrong parts! OK :thumb

rob, nakabakal na guid man sang bike. went to performance cycle and test-ride some bikes there. i settled for a GT Avalance 1.0 hardtail and so far daw ok man. i just need to change the pedals though to clipless coz it-comes with a flatform and clips. also, i might change my tire to slick kay mostly concrete roads dire sa Lake Shore Trail although my 1 mile stretch dire nga rolling nga gravel.:thumb
so far daw maayo man sikad-sikad ta although daw wala pa guid resistensya a. medyo sakit pa ti-il ta sikad especially against the changing wind-pattern dire sa lake. #-o
nice to go to north beach avenue pre, that's about 15 miles from my place. rolling man ang dalan, and mostly lake view guid as you pass McCormick place, Soldier Field, Fields Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier...:thumb
nami man tani roadie pre kay mamag-an. i envy those who ride roadie kay kadasig guid sa ila pero one time when i rode to Shedd Aquarium, nag-bundak gulpi ang ulan pag-balikid ko ako na lang ga-sikad kay ang mga roadie nag-palanago na under sang kahoy kay hadlok maka-danlog...:sneer:

Spain's Alejandro Valverde won the 1st stage of the Tour de France...:thumb
robby:b
Jul 08, 2008, 02:06 PM
Ice, Valverde is a good rider but I wouldn't pick a rider to win it all at this early stages of the race. Remember, there's 5 mountain stages to come and another time trial. I think stages, 15, 16, 17, and 18 are mountain stages. Lance Armstrong never worry about the early stages of the tour. The mountain stages are always his challenge to gain some time from his contenders. You also have to consider the strength of a team. George Hincapie's (Lance's teamate in Discovery) new Columbia team, is a strong team. Garmin-Chipotle team of David Millar, Christian Vandevelde, and Kim Kirchen are tough too. I always know who will have a better chance of winning after the mountain stages were most of the riders crack at the end. But again, Alejandro Valverde is a climber and i will never count him out. Most of the cyclist here are stage winners of different tours, Giro d'talia, tour of California, tour of Romandie, tour of Suisse etc., before the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong was predictable 'coz he only prepares for one big prestigious race and rarely joins the small tours. There are 20 stages and we just started. I'll take my pick after the mountains. The rider who will conquer the Alps. :thumb

rob, i do agree. just the stage 4 of the tour and we have already 3 different riders wearing the yellow jersey. it's still too early to predict who we will win it all especially they are very far from the mountain stages. i do believe that the killer alps is what separates the winners and the pretenders. so let's just watch out and enjoy. my probable picks to win it all:
1. Cadel Evans - Silence-Lotto
2. Alejandro Valverde - CDE
3. George Hincapie - Columbia
4. David Millar - Garmin-Chipotle
5. Denis Menchov - Rabobank

Yes Ice, "Big George" Hincapie has been doing this since Team US Postal and Team Discovery for Lance. He's been a great "domestique" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_domestique)
Stage 6 was a grind too. Kim Kirchen (Columbia) leads the GC now.

pero seriously, i don't know what motivation thus Lance Armstrong have in coming back. definitely it's not about the money coz, he will not be paid for joining Astana. and why Astana? we all know that they were not invited in this year tour because they quit the previous tour after their lead rider, Vinokuorov was thrown out for drug use. anyway, whatever reason he has, let's just wish him well...:D
as for the "other & more popular" Lance (at least on this site), he seems to be disenchanted with cycling for now because of the doping scandal. he's into Michael Phelps right now...
from cycling to swimming....

Mas guapo gid man si Lance mo p're Perry, kay sa kay Lance Armstrong.
Michael Phelps naman ha, ayos!
Medyo ma-intindihan ko ni si Lance Armstrong. Its not money, most likely. Maybe its a Michael Jordan thing - its an itch that needs to be scratched. Basi natak-an na siya bike-bike nga isahanon and leisurely, ga-pangita real competition. Kag basi na-inspired kay Dara Torres nga at 41 years old naka-Silver Medal pa sa Beijing. Iya siguro, daw kaya pa niya, ukon daw wala pa sang maka-pirde sa iya sa mga new generation.
BTW, do you Rob and Perry still remember the dirt bikes of the late '70s and early '80s? The Suzuki RM, Yamaha YZ, and Honda Elsinore? I saw this three bikes, mud-encrusted and rusty, with racing colors and numbers and racing specs selling at a surplus store near MaryMart. I immediately remembered the times when I watched with utter fascination in 1978, I was 10, when the Camel Moto-Cross was held in Dumaguete and my bestfriend and I would stay in the pits, because his uncle owned the Equiserve Yamaha dealership and we would be allowed to watch from the trackside with his uncle. I remember asking for autographs of Butch Chase ( Suzuki ), Macky Carapiet ( Yamaha ), Redan Lopez ( Honda ), and smelling the high octane gas and the deafening roar. Wonder if they still have parts for these machines. Basi barato kag masarangan, nami magpa-restore. Will ask around here too. Mangkut man kamo da bi mga 'pre, basi lagaw kamo kag maka-passby Yamaha, Honda, or Suzuki dealerships. Post lang di ah, pirme man ko di basa. Thanks!:thumb

i'm not into Moto-Cross, but i do remember the Camel Motocross because the leg in Negros is being run in the quadrangle of my high school alma mater before which is a stone-throw away from our house. i still remember the likes of Jolet Jao, Jovy Saulog, Pepo Rubi, and Butch Chase. i don't know about Macky Carapiet, daw sa karting man ni sa ya. anyway, the Camel Motocross was really a big summer event at that time together with the Marlboro Tour ng Pilipinas. but, indirectly, politics got in the way of a law banning cigarette companies to sponsor sporting events.#-o#-o

Yes Ice, there is now a law banning any cigarette-maker from sporting any sporting event and any art or cultural event. They now call the Camel Moto-cross as the Moto-Cross Philippines or something.
Carapiet indeed is in karting, and now in Circuit Car Racing and Rallies. But he started out in the moto-cross as a teen-ager.
Saulog and Jao are now in Moto GP ( flat-track racing ). Glenn Aguilar of RP is the 3-time ( or 4-time, not sure ) Asian Moto-cross champion, and is the defending champ this year. If ever they make Moto-cross an Olympic event, like BMX Riding, basi pa lang maka-medal ta.
Out of topic, but still racing - I think the decision to strip Lewis Hamilton of his win last week stunk. It was like nullifying Magic's Baby Hook.

I agree moods, it's the passion. MJ, Dara, you name it. Even Brett Favre who retired a few times in Greenbay, now plays for the NY Jets. :-k
You know, Lance Armstrong never stopped biking. He even finished a few mountain bike races after his retirement. He also ran a couple marathons in NY and Boston. I remember watching this guy from Argentina who won gold in Men's Madison Cycling in Beijing. He was 43 years old! I am not sure of Lance seeing the podium in Tour De France. The Astana team will have to get the same type of "domestiques". I will still cheer for him though.
Motocross? My Mom did not like the idea of me getting involved. I always travel with my Dad watching the races. How could you guys not remember the Acdol brothers? Yoyong Acdol being a tight rival of Redan, and Bangol Acdol who has always been a rival of Butch Chase? The Acdols were the huge underdogs who collected so many trophies in their home at Lapuz. (didto permi ga tambay erpats ko mo ) BTW Moods, Castor Oil na ang mabahu-an mo from the dirt bikes sang una.

Yes, they are Moods. I think it's one of their businesses. Robert knows them via the Volkswagen route too. They tried to organize a Volkswagen club or something years ago. I've been to that shop (if it's still in the same place as before). God knows how much money Robert has poured into that place over the years  .

You were only 11 yrs. old Moods when the 1st generation Acdols, race the Suzuki RM125 and RM250 Air-cooled single-cylinder 2 stroke and they were really good at it. During the early 80’s, Suzuki came up with the Water-cooled ”Full Floater” mono shock system, but had to compete with the faster Honda CR’s Pro-link. The Lopez brothers had the luxury of having stock Hondas and had a number of bike mechanics to maintain the newer versions. Butch Chase even better, had the upper hand and connections with stock RMs. The Acdols were riders and mechanics at the same time. I remember when the Acdols started using the water-cooled bikes, they had problems with it during a hectic race schedule because you have to warm up these water-cooled bikes properly before the race. (I use to kick start it for them) They did not have enough bikes for their racers too. The 2nd generation Acdols Chad and Nonoy competed with the likes of Rampart Lopez and Saulog but never dedicated their life to it. Chad & Nonoy are the kids of “Langok” Acdol (my Dad’s best friend sa inuman ) the expert VW mechanic who takes care of my Beetle before. :smile2:

Its Nonoy Acdol I know very well. Aside from maintaining my Beetle before, upod man kami sa Iloilo Volkswagen Kafer Club. Nonoy is a past president. Now, I know I can talk moto-cross with him.
The YZ, RM, and Elsinore were the racing machines. Later the CR. I had classmates at Silliman High, Spanish mestizos from landed families ( Teves, Villegas, Roxas, Montenegro, Villanueva ) who were also into racing. While I was not part of their barkada initially, I was not 6-feet tall and mestizo like they were, but we became close when we became teammates in the Varsity basketball team.
They often raced at the race grounds behind St Paul's College ( now Univ.), in a place called "kawa" ( cauldron in Cebuano ), using stock Honda 125 XL's, the Yamaha DT 125, and the Suzuki DZR 125. These were of course the "civilian" bikes, but they converted it to racing versions. Every Friday ( early dismissal eh ) , I would hop in with these mestizos in their pick-ups and watch them race. I was so happy when they converted a Honda XL 100 and Kawasaki KE 100 into racing bikes. They say it was for their younger brothers, and for me, para maka-lab-ot daw ko, he, he, he. So I sometimes raced in borrowed racing gear from their younger brothers, and always lost. But I cherish that experience of racing and pretending I was Bob Hannah ( Yamaha, World's Best Moto-X racer at that time ).
What surprised me, since it didn't get as much publicity then, was how nicely and responsive the Kawasaki was compared to the Honda ( maybe because it was a 2-stroke ).
I also remember during the mid-to-late '80s, the late Ulrich Yanson ( son of the owner of Ceres Liner ), beat a just starting out Jolet Jao, Jovie Saulog, and Ernie Leongson, in the Dumaguete, Bacolod, and Cebu legs of the Camel Moto-X. Ulrich was a Sillimanian and was considered the hometown boy. I think he was named "Rookie of the Year".
The advantage of Butch Chase and Redan I think was that they were Company Riders, so they were fully backed up by Honda and Suzuki. The Acdols, I think, raced on their own and had to provide for themselves. In the Philippine Moto-X Website, a sample Program of the 1977 Japan-Guam-RP Moto-X Meet was shown, and it had the name Rene Acdol coming in 2nd over-all to Butch Chase in the Expert 125 Class.
This is a very interesting thread Rob, keep on posting.

Winning 7 straight titles after recovering from testicular cancer, is just simply incredible. There's no question about it that Lance Armstrong is one of the greatest athlete in the history of sports.
Greg LeMond won 3 times Moods. 1986,1989 and 1990. He won the white jersey (best rookie of the tour) in 1984 I think.
There's bad blood between these two cyclists. LeMond is such a character. #-o He accused Armstrong a few times for doping. He told the media "If Armstrong's clean, it's the greatest comeback. And if he's not, then it's the greatest fraud." After a couple more wins, he said "Lance is ready to do anything to keep his secret. I don't know how he can continue to convince everybody of his innocence." :brick
LeMond roadbikes are still sold all over the US. It's a very comfy bike. But having a bad history with Trek bikes (Lance's bike), LeMond bikes are being dissed.

Lance Armstrong won the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race in Colorado over 6-time champ Dave Wiens....:clapclap:
This is one of the toughest bike race coz it is the nation's highest-altitude bike race. Although some of the competitors were amateurs, there are some notables like Tinker Juarez and Wiens himself woho are both former world champions...:thumb
Lance placed second to Wiens last year but this time he blitzed everybody by winning 17 minutes off the record, running flat in the last mile or so...:clapclap:
As Wiens said after the race, "He's Lance Armstrong and he just off the Tour. Last year he was just off the couch."
"He killed it. he got away and time-trialled it for 65 miles."#-o
Nice to see Lance back in MTB saddle again...:clapclap::clapclap::clapclap:
