I've heard about "American Idol" watched by millions in America, but I've never really watched it myself. But when I read in the Philippine Star about a Filipina making it to something like the Final 32, I became curious, especially since the article mentioned that she's drop-dead gorgeous  . Well, technically, she's an American from Hawaii of Filipino lineage, a Fil-Am, if you will. Her name is Camille Velasco. Her father is from Batanes while her mother is from Cagayan de Oro City. She made it past the 3rd round to make it to the Finals, according to the article.

I checked American Idol's schedule and last night (Wednesday) was the announcement of the Round 4 winners. I decided to check it out and I noticed another Pinay-looking lady, not really drop-dead gorgeous but cute  . And when the parents and the little sister were focused, I don't need any article to tell me that she's of Filipino lineage too. Her name is Jasmine Prias. She made it to the Finals.

I don't know when will be the Finals. American Idol is on Fox, channel 32. Check your local listings. Website: http://www.idolonfox.com

C & P from Inq7.net:

ANOTHER Filipina has wowed America.

Jasmine Trias, 17, has landed in the top 12 of "American Idol," the wildly popular talent search on television.

From the last group of eight semifinalists who competed last March 2, Trias was one of two voted to the final round via telephone and text entries from viewers all over the United States. She joins fellow Pinay Camile Velasco from Maui, Hawaii who competed in the second group of eight last Feb. 18.

There were a total of 32 semifinalists.

Despite being short, Trias won the audience's nod with her soulful rendition of Whitney Houston's "(I Want to) Run to You." She was accompanied to Hollywood, where the semifinals were held, by her parents, Rudy and Nora Trias, and siblings Ronel, 15, and Neolani, 6.

It was the first time that Jasmine was seen on the show. Her audition performance was not among those televised in the first few weeks of the show's current season.

"I love the sound of your voice. I really like you, I hope you move on," said Randy Jackson. Paula Abdul gushed: "You're such a pro!"

Added the sarcastic and much-feared Simon Cowell: "You are potentially a very good singer."

It was always easy to spot Trias among the contestants. She wore a faux flower on her right ear. "It's my Hawaii thing," she said. While Velasco was born here in the Philippines, Trias was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Nov. 3, 1986.

I'm very proud of them. I'm sure their parents and relatives are, too.

"Pinays" advance to next round =D>

Trias actually got a better impression from the judges than Velasco but I favor Velasco more because she's just a stunner, a true Filipina beauty =P~ (even though she's half-Irish).

The singing part is on Tuesdays, 7:00 pm (central) on Fox. Voting results on Wednesdays.

Unfortunately, Velasco had been voted out in the latest round, which makes Jasmine Trias the only Filipina left in the finals. Im sure she'll be in the top 5 at least. There are 8 finalists left. One finalist is being voted out every week. Here in the Philippines, American Idol is being shown in ABC 5 though the show is at least a month late. Showtimes are Monday to Friday at 6pm. It is also shown in Star World, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8pm. Enjoy watching Trias who is a stunner and a talented singer. Go Jasmine!

As you probably know by now, Fil-Am Jasmine Trias was voted out of "Idol" last week. Over the last few weeks or so, I have received a few e-mails asking to vote for Jasmine. Rest assured, my wife tried to hit the redial button as often as he could last week  .

I am not a singer, but I'm not tone-deaf either, and Jasmine, it turned out, was the least superior of the 3 finalists. She deserved to go. But hey, this is more of a popularity contest anyway. The one really good singer (the best among the field IMO) was voted out before Jasmine. And one of the 2 finalists doesn't deserve to be there. She really sounds like a cross between Macy Gray and the Chipmunks. (Don't freak out, just my opinion) :D .
