About 500 Indian doctors want to work in RP

ABOUT 500 Indian doctors have applied to work in the Philippines to ease a chronic shortage but cannot be given jobs because the constitution forbids it, the health secretary said Wednesday.
Francisco Duque said the Indian doctors were awaiting Manila's approval to start work but a provision in the Constitution bars foreign doctors from working in government hospitals.

"I have 500 applicants from India but I cannot hire them because our Constitution doesn't allow that," he said in a speech to a medical group.

He said the Indian doctors could otherwise have filled the vacant posts at various government hospitals due to the large number of Filipino medical professionals who seek work abroad.

Asked how the Indian doctors could be accommodated, Duque said: "We really do not know." He called for a review of the constitutional provision.

The Philippine Medical Association warned last year that the country's health system risked complete collapse in a few years due to the large numbers of Filipino nurses and doctors who have found better-paying jobs abroad.

The Constitution strictly limits the areas where foreigners can find jobs in the Philippines. Foreign doctors are allowed to work here only in very exceptional cases.

Wow... may house call na, may paaman pa nga payong kag pwede pa 5/6  .

Seriously, do these Indian docs even know how much Filipino doctors are getting paid? And the fact that the government is seriously considering this is even more pathetic.

There is no solution to the brain drain if that's your government at work. Pa-America na lang kamo tanan...

Did you know that India is one of the most prolific factories for doctors in the world? Here in the US, they are the largest MD import. Just like in the Philippines, their chances of success in their home country, according to my colleagues, is good but not assured. I would not be surprised if they go to Pinas. Perhaps this was sparked by the recent visit of their Prime Minister, and the presence of 70,000 Indians in the Philippines. The pay may be better if the government pays them, than the scanty rupees they may get in India. It is too bad though, that our country is losing a huge asset: its medical proffessionals who leave mostly as RN's and MD's turned RN's just to get a better future.

This is not the issue but it's interesting that I don't see a lot of Indian nurses here in the U.S. :???: Even rarer is finding an Indian MD turned nurse :-k . Interesting indeed.

BTW what's the exchange rate Peso Vs Rupee? anyone?

We can say the same thing for other nationalities as well. Could be the demand. Maybe U.S. medical facilities really prefer Pinoy nurses. After all, most of the foreign nurses here are recruited/petitioned. A foreign nurse here is almost always, a Pinoy nurse. Basi wala lang sing nagakapasar sa ila sa CGFNS? Ukon wala iya CG sa India? Maybe they have to take it in another country and the process may not be worth it.

Back on-topic - I have read in another forum that Indian government doctors are in worse situation than Pinoy docs when it comes to pay. And those who couldn't leave for the U.S. try their luck in other countries.

As of March 25, 1 Philippine peso is equivalent to .8601 Indian rupee. (source: Yahoo Finance)
